Halloween makeup for people who do not want a costume

You can look deliberate on Halloween without dressing as anything. Four directions that read as the occasion while still looking like makeup rather than a costume.

There is a gap between a full costume and doing nothing, and it is the most useful place to be on Halloween. You want to look like you understood the occasion, not like you are going to be asked what you are supposed to be.

The answer is to take a look you would already wear and push it one step past where you would normally stop.

What separates Halloween makeup from costume makeup

Costume makeup turns you into something else. It uses face paint, prosthetics or colour in places where colour does not naturally go, and it only makes sense in context.

Halloween makeup makes you look like a heightened version of yourself. It uses the same products you own, in the same places, at an intensity you would not usually choose. It still looks like makeup when you take the photo home.

The second one survives the walk to the bar, the group photo and the conversation with someone's parents.

Four directions that work

The deep lip

The simplest and the most effective. A wine, oxblood or near-black cherry lip over bare skin and a softly defined eye.

What makes it read as the occasion rather than a normal night out is the depth. Go at least two steps darker than your usual. A lip that looks slightly alarming in your bathroom mirror reads as intentional in a dim room.

The heavy smoked eye

Not a smoky eye as usually sold, which is a gradient with a tidy outer edge. This is denser, pushed further out past the socket, and smudged along the lower lash line until there is no clean line left.

Keep the lip nude and the skin simple. The eyes have to be the only thing happening.

Graphic liner

The most modern-looking option. A hard geometric line across the crease, or drawn up from the outer corner toward the temple, in black or a saturated colour.

Precision is the whole point here, so it is the one direction that rewards taking your time. Everything else on the face stays bare.

Reflective metal

Foil or metallic shadow packed over the whole lid, with no attempt at blending into a gradient. Silver and gunmetal read colder and stranger than gold, which is usually what you want for Halloween.

Pair with a bare lip, because metal plus colour reads as festive rather than eerie.

Where people go wrong

Adding a token spooky element. A single fake cobweb drawn at the temple over an otherwise normal face looks unfinished rather than themed. Either commit to a graphic element or leave it off.

Using Halloween as an excuse for every trend at once. Dark lip, metallic eye, heavy contour and glitter is not four times as striking as any one of them. It is less striking, because nothing leads.

Forgetting the room is dark. Most Halloween parties are poorly lit and heavily photographed. Subtlety disappears. Whatever you choose, go harder than feels right in your bathroom.

Making it last the night

Halloween runs long and usually involves a crowded room. The same rules that save a New Year's Eve look apply:

  • Cream products first, powder to lock them, never the reverse.
  • Line the whole lip, not just the edge, so wear looks deliberate.
  • Blot with paper rather than adding powder on top of worn makeup.
  • Waterproof on the lashes and the waterline.

There is a fuller version in New Year's Eve makeup that lasts past midnight, and the photography-specific advice in holiday party makeup that actually photographs well applies here almost word for word.

Try it before Friday

Four looks in Vélora cover these directions: Vamp for the deep lip, Smoky Glam for the heavy eye, Editorial for graphic liner and Disco Glam for reflective metal. Each one renders onto your own selfie, so you can see which suits your colouring before you commit to a lipstick you will wear once.

Pair any of them with the Party occasion and the look is interpreted with more intensity than it would be for a weekday.
